Keep reading to find out what you should do if your heater is giving you a hard time this winter.

Check the Thermostat

The first thing you should do if your heater isn’t turning on is to check the thermostat. Make sure the thermostat is set in the “heat” position and then try to turn it on again. You should also change the batteries, even if you think the old ones are still working fine.

Check the Temperature Setting

The temperature setting on the thermostat needs to be set above the indoor temperature that appears on the display.

Check the Power Source

Although this might seem obvious, our professionals at Royal Class Service often get calls from customers regarding broken heaters that are actually just not getting the electricity they need to run. Check to make sure there is power going to your furnace. Check the electrical panel in your home and set the correct circuit breaker for the heater to the “On” position. You should also check the Emergency switches. Sometimes there is more than one if your heating unit is located in the basement.

Be Patient

There are time delays in our electronic devices now to protect equipment from rapid change over between modes. Try walking away for a few moments and allow up to 10 minutes to pass before getting nervous about the situation. A delay is used to protect your heating and cooling equipment from coming on too quickly (known as short-cycling), which can cause damage.

Check the Filter

If your furnace is a forced-air system, you may need to replace the filter to make it run efficiently. If you see a blinking light or code on your heating unit, write down this information before you reset the power in case you need to call a technician.
